A dye tracer reveals cross-shelf dispersion and interleaving on the Oregon shelf

چکیده
[1] A fluorescent dye tracer was injected into the pycnocline on the Oregon shelf at a depth of 9–10 m. It spread rapidly cross-shelf as two distinct layers, one above the other in the water column, split by interleaving dye-free water. The vertical scale of these layers, and associated density steps, was 1–2 m, and the horizontal extent of interleaving exceeded 1.6 km after an inertial period. The upper dye layer was sharply peaked and embedded in a strong vertical density gradient. The lower layer was slablike and associated with weak stratification. Both layers were inclined slightly in density space. It is proposed that internal wave-induced mixing and the lateral collapse of mixing patches were important mechanisms. Analogies can be drawn between these dye structures and frequently-observed thin planktonic layers. By approximating the dye dispersion as a Fickian process, estimated isopycnal and diapycnal eddy diffusivities of kx = 4.1 m 2 s 1 and kz = 1.4 10 5 m s 1 are obtained. Citation: Dale, A. C., M. D. Observations of mixed layer restratification by onshore surface transport following wind reversal in a coastal upwelling region
[1] Observations, from the Oregon continental shelf, describe the slumping of a coastal upwelling front in response to a reversal of winds from upwellingto downwellingfavorable. Initially, the front outcropped in a surface mixed layer of depth 10–20 m with a pronounced cross-shelf density gradient. Following wind reversal, both the unbalanced cross-shelf pressure gradient and wind-driven Ekman ...

متن کاملWind-driven inner-shelf circulation off central Oregon during summer
[1] Velocity measurements from 17 deployments of moored acoustic Doppler current profilers obtained during four summer upwelling seasons are used to describe the crossshelf divergence of Ekman transport in the inner shelf off Oregon. For each deployment the measured surface and bottom cross-shelf transports were compared with estimates of the theoretical Ekman transports to find the fraction of...

متن کاملThe salinity signature of the cross-shelf exchanges in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean: Numerical simulations
A high-resolution model is used to characterize the dominant patterns of sea surface salinity (SSS) variability generated by the freshwater discharges of the Rio de la Plata (RdlP) and the Patos/Mirim Lagoon in the southwestern Atlantic region. We identify three dominant modes of SSS variability. The first two, which have been discussed in previous studies, represent the seasonal and the intera...
